The Academy Theatre is located near Museum Island in Berlin. The theatre is inspired and defined by the island’s cultural identity, allowing the continuation of this cultural development. We treated the site as a concrete block. Inspired by Chillida’s sculptures, we defined the theatre complex by curving the piece into a sculptural icon while respecting the geometry of the location. More specifically, we measured the surrounding geometry of the city and applied this to the geometry of our grid. We applied the ratio found in the city to the design of the theatre and its surrounding structures. The surrounding structures consist of a restaurant, exhibition space, and workshops. The theatre is housed in the central building. The theory of our approach was inspired by Gropius’ Total Theatre and Shakespeare theatre (Globe) in London. This theory suggests that with an open stage, the crowd has a better experience because of the number of interactions possible between the actors and viewers. The structure of the theatre is designed to create two separate structures. The exterior and interior are structured in different dimensions. the interior structure on the ground floor allows for direct access from all sides. These accesses are rotatable wooden structures that allow for swift closing of the auditorium whilst the play is in progress. On the 1st and 2nd floors, we have balconies that face the stage and are mirrored towards the lounges. This way, the visitors enjoying the play on the ground floor will become actors during the breaks as they enter the lounges.
