Perma-City
We started out our analysis at the scale of the city and continued at a scale of 1:10’000 and 1:5’000 to understand the context and the site’s relation to it. First, the infrastructure and mobility network were looked at, followed by the green network, the morphology of the urban tissue, and the relationship between open public spaces and public buildings. Function, centralities, and user’s perspective were also analyzed. We researched the recent and future transformations in the area and identified architectural relevancies worth preserving from the ex-macello complex. Environmental issues related to cementification and industrial activities were duly noted. Data and information gathered with the analysis were summarized and divided in the SWOT analysis. The following step was the development of a concept, starting with the identification of a set of objectives that would address the weaknesses and threats highlighted in the analysis while building on the strengths and opportunities. These objectives, divided into five categories, were translated into a series of urban and architectural strategies. Four main strategic actions, large containers of multiple smaller actions, were defined: urban tissue re-scaling, a city within the city, agro-social gardens and linear parks, and a cultural network. Together with these strategies, we created the slogan “Perma-city,” our values inspired by the permaculture design principles, and a conceptual image that would guide our masterplan design.
