Yazd is a historical city located in Iran. This area of heritage is protected by UNESCO. The main objective of the master plan is to restructure the system of accesses and infrastructures, relationships among main elements of the context, and public/open spaces/facilities in a scenario-based design that includes 120 new housing units, a cultural, an educational center, and an agricultural park.
We had to pay attention to the multiple restrictions since the entire project is inserted in the UNESCO buffer zone. The masterplan is constituted by a main pedestrian “loop” that connects the two poles of the project, which are split due to the presence of an old agricultural field. This loop links the educational center to the cultural one, and both act as filters before arriving at the more private residential areas.
The northern part of the existing agricultural field is converted into an agricultural park, keeping the existing boundaries of the private fields (historical parts) recognizable thanks to the use of newly built paths. The housing units follow a more traditional style and morphology in opposition to the more contemporary one of the cultural and educational centers, and they are built with the use of multiple typologies.
